Monterey Car Week – 2014

Monterey_-_1Monterey Car Week, August 11th through the 17th is considered the pinnacle of car events that occurs on the Monterey Peninsula. It all started back in the 50’s − Holy Car Week, as it is referred to by many, attracts cars and people from all over the world. There are literally 100’s of car events occurring throughout the week. The variety of events includes vintage car races, car rallies, car shows, private car events and car auctions. The week concludes with the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance. For the past several years, automotive marques have celebrated their bi-centennial and centennial anniversaries during this week. This year was the celebration of 100 Years of Maserati cars.

Club Auto Sport’s tenants were well represented at many of the marque car shows events with some of their prized award winning show cars participating and on display.

Monterey_-_2Thursday, “The Quail” Motorsports Show is held at the Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley. Admission to this event includes a selection of fine foods and wines. TEX OTTO was invited to show his 1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7. One of 500 cars produced by Porsche, these cars was also one of the first Porsche’s offered for street and track use made available to the general public.

Saturday, Concorso Italiano was staged at the Black Horse Golf Course on Fort Ord. This show is now in its 39th year. MIKE GULETT showed his impeccable 1966 Bizzarrini GT 5300 Strada. A car he purchased at one of the car auctions in Monterey some five years ago. He also received a class award on stage at the Concorso. Mike’s car was also a past winner at the Quail event.

Monterey_-_4Sunday, is the final day of this outstanding Monterey Car Week. At the 64th Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance, over 220 of the best cars were being judged in their respective classes. The best of show was a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Coupe bodied by Scaglietti. This was only the second time in the history of the show, that a post war car has won best of show since 1968. KARRA L. CANUM entered her stunning 1958 BMW 503 Series II Cabriolet. Earlier in the week, her car was entered in the Tour d’ Elegance. On Sunday, the BMW placed third in the Post War Touring class − our congratulations to Karra on her class win!

The big news of the week was the record setting sales of vehicles at the auto auctions that were occurring throughout the week. The amount of combined sales from the five major auto auctions was over $400,000,000.

This was a new record high for car auction sales during Monterey’s Car Week, with Ferrari’s fetching many of the recording setting prices. Top of the list was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, sold at “no reserve” for a bid price of $38.1 million.

Monterey_-_5Some of our Club Auto Sport tenants had brought classic muscle cars, including a Mustang Eleanor, and another brought vintage Le Man racing cars to sell at a one of five major auctions. Thanks for all your participation at

Monterey Car Week; it’s by far one of the finest and most popular car enthusiastic events in the world!
