Ask yourself – What is the best way to end your summer?
With a Passion for Patriotism by attending San Diego’s Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival! The weekend was fun-filled with many activities that attract and cater to all age groups – car enthusiasts – and military supporters!

Last year’s 14th annual event featured 31 historical NASCAR’s; several of those drivers gave rides to military men and women during the event. Included in this group were both Ralph Borelli andJohn Davis the managing partners of Club Auto Sport. John himself from a military family background with his father Jack serving in the Navy during WWII, and John in the Army during Vietnam, said “t
his opportunity to give back to our troops through the small but extremely appreciated thrill of riding in a race c
ar was very rewarding each lap”. Jim Philion, a longtime racer, car enthusiast and military supporter as well, claimed it was the first interactive event where our U.S. Navy Sailors participate in what is called ‘The Pit Crew Challenge”
Taking a few paragraphs from a great article written by Mark Maynard of Union Tribune San Diego, the article describes what the Pit Crew Challenge is all about:
The Pit Crew Challenge is based on the NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew challenge and is staged as an actual hot pit stop. There are teams of 8 to 10 members, including at least one female. The idea was for teams from the USS Reagan, the USS Benfold, helicopters and whatever to go at it!
The timed challenge, held at the noon ceremonies both days, begins by pushing a stock car about 50 feet into an outlined box on the tarmac, then various members will jack it up and change four tires, fill it with fuel (for safety, water is being used in specially built tanks.), then the team will push the car out of the pit box and across a finish line.
“Much of the NASCAR-grade equipment was donated,” Philion said. “When people heard that the challenge was part of a fundraiser for the Navy, support came pourin
g in,” he said. That includes two cars being shipped by stock-car builder Rhine Enterp
rise from North Carolina. Red Bull kicked in wheels and tires and a bucket of lug nuts and mechanic’s gloves came from Wine Country Motorsports.
This powerful weekend culminated in true American patriotic style as the members of HSCRS don
ated $7000 from their Ride-Of-Your-Life (ROYL) generos
ity to our troops.
